A wonderful celebration for the raising of two Flags took place in St. Louis GNS on Tuesday, June 18th. The school was celebrating the achievement of a second Green Flag and a first Active Flag.

The Active Flag preparation began with a review of the PE plan and the development of extra resources for the gymnastics and outdoor and adventure curriculum strands. There were road safety and cycling workshops and lots of competitions. St. Louis Girls’ School have a wide variety of active extra-curricular activities which include Gaelic, soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, athletics and dancing. The Active Flag co-ordinators added aerobics, a Move and Groove class, a Get Fit class and a daily cardio workout to ensure that the students were challenged physically in a non-competitive manner. They worked with the Green Flag Committee on the WOW project and organised a team of senior girls to play games with younger students during break times. These games proved very popular and were worked on a rotational basis. Brian Peppard delivered an inspiring talk on the importance of exercise and the benefits of becoming a member of the Phoenix Athletics Club. Teresa O Hanlon gave an excellent presentation on the importance of good nutrition when taking exercise.

Active Week took place during the week of May 28th to June 1st 2012. The students enjoyed a very wide range of active activities, a Jersey Day was organised for Goal by Mrs Carmel Gallagher and there was a sports themed assembly. The week ended with a sports day in the park with a DJ which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Parents’ Association helped by organising a trek through Rossmore in March and ten members of staff completed a First Aid course in February to ensure safety for everyone in all activities.

Well done to our inspiring Active Flag Committee and the co-ordinators, Mrs Irene Flynn and Ms Úna O’ Reilly.
